WAVES - Ocean Waves Continue

OPENING QUESTIONS:

Let's see how we're doing with Ocean Waves Generally

LEARNING TARGET:

I will share my teams' findings on Rogue Waves during today's class.

I will explore the physical features that contribute to ocean wave characteristics during today's class.

WORDS O' THE DAY:

  • frequency (waves/second or waves/minute)
  • period ("seconds/wave or minutes/wave")
  • amplitude (wave height)
  • wavelength (distance from crest to crest)
  • crest (the highest point of the wave)
  • trough (the lowest point of the wave)
  • speed = (wavelength x frequency. NOTE: (meters/wave) x (waves/sec) = meters/sec
  • Tectonic Plate
  • Earthquake Magnitude
  • tsunami (a water wave typically caused by earthquakes and landslides)
  • Subduction Zone

WORK O' THE DAY:

Let's review the formative/opener--

Now let's shift gears a bit. Let's have one person from each team share your slides from yesterday's work on Rogue Waves in our submission page found on our HOMEPAGE

Any more thoughts on Rogues?

Any requests?

Let's move back to ocean waves -- quick pop quiz: Our 3 Bigs are???

Why do we say that ocean waves (and in fact ALL types of waves in physics: light, sound, earthquake, gravity etc...) carry energy and not matter?

Since no discussion of ocean waves is complete without a fair dose of SURFING let's take a gander at this amazing video from PBS called "Condition Black".

It outlines the causes and most definitely the effects of one of the greatest ocean wave events of the 20th century in Hawaii. Watching that video is where I got the idea for THE 3 BIGS. Pay particular attention on how the ocean topography (The depth and contour of the ocean bottom) effects surface waves.
